Travels with Yeti: Live and Learn and Live

by Hiram Connell

Travels with Yeti takes you along on the journeys of an adventurous New England couple who set out to challenge the unknowns of living on a sailboat and traveling in foreign lands. For five years, Hiram and Helen Connell lived their dreams aboard a 36-foot sailboat, navigating waters from Maine to the Caribbean, to Trinidad, to Venezuela, Colombia, Panama and back. Their story describes in close detail the what's, how's and why's of all they encountered - of life aboard, dangers at sea and the mechanical, meteorological and cultural challenges they experienced on a daily basis, all from the humble perspective of mere mortals.

The main portion of these adventures covers the period of travel from 1989 to 1994, but also includes significant life events that inspired and enabled the Connells' odyssey. Over two hundred color photographs document these journeys to lands of lush palms and piratical bureaucrats, new and soon-to-be old friends, adventure and misadventure, lessons learned and lessons shared. Hitch a ride as a stowaway on Hiram and Helen's two amazing voyages to Paradise and back again.

Hiram Connell grew up in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, graduating from Lowell Technological Institute (now the University of Massachusetts in Lowell) in 1960. He and his wife Helen (Jenness) Connell acquired the necessary sailing skills for their voyage as members of the Minuteman Power Squadron from the Acton, MA, area and at the Jubilee Yacht Club in Beverly, MA. They acquired Yeti, CS 36, in 1986 and set sail for the Caribbean and beyond in 1989...
